My classroom management is meant to facilitate the learning process. I have the desks set up in a way that half the room is always facing the other half of the room. This allows for more a sense of community and respect when students can see their peers asking questions and participating in classroom discussions. In addition, this also allows me to utilize the white boards on both sides of the room rather than just one. I do have a policy in place for late work and its penalty. However, I also have in place a policy which allows every student to make corrections on assignments and resubmit them for full credit. The point of the education is mastery of the subject, not a grade. With the current block schedule, each class is set up so that I have 27 minutes of class activity (such as lecture, or student work) with three minute breaks between. This serves not only to give students a chance to use the restroom or get a drink, but allows them to stand and move, thus increasing the oxygen and blood to the brain and promoting learning. Finally, in dealing with disciplinary issues, my goal is to handle it primarily within my class and quietly. I view sending a student to the office as a last resort. I find that one-on-one conversations between myself and the student, and possibly a parent if necessary, is often enough to quell the issue.
