As much as possible, I try to find ways to get the students interested in a topic that is either directly related to a concept, or one that can lead into the concept. This is probably the hardest part about teaching math, I think, particularly to a group of students who come into the class already hating the subject. At the school in which I teach, students must have one project per semester that can be considered as an artifact for their portfolio. I'm sure every teacher today can attest to students using their phones in class for social media rather than academic work. Deciding to combine this with another project I had seen, I gave my Geometry students the task of selecting a quadrilateral and giving it a personality. They had to create a mock social media page, such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. in which the owner of the page was their quadrilateral. Using the personality they gave it, they had to incorporate at least ten facts about the figure on their project, but in a way that didn't just list them out textbook style. Below is one such example from a student that has been struggling most of the year, but excelled on the project.
