Communication with parents is extremely important. Of course there is the standard progress reports that are sent out every two weeks, but sometimes more communication is required or warranted. I will contact parents when I feel that a little extra push or incentive is needed beyond what I can apply in the classroom. I also have a few parents that I maintain frequent contact with due to their child needing perhaps more help. It is not all negative...I love emailing a parent to tell them that their child, who may have been struggling, did particularly outstanding on a quiz or a test. I let the parents know exactly how my class is run and my expectations for my students. When the parents are involved with helping their student, pushing them to keep working, or even just being there to congratulate them when hard work pays off.
